After leaving the Panthers she stopped attending high school after she had completed her studies for a year at Calumet High School. She started performing in small groups all over the Chicago area first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe with her former boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka was married to Hassan in the year 1970.
