Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She is also an accomplished public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has been awarded awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in popular culture. Committed to destroying the stereotypes related to women in popular culture, she has also been working to address issues relating to targeted harassment women and others on the internet. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Apart from being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to start a web-based series that would examine the gender roles in video games. However, she ended up being the victim of an online harassment campaign. The attack wasn't enough to halt her. It actually increased her importance to be a feminist as well as media critique.
